One thousand years ago, a waterborne disease was released into the wild. It targeted the weak, making them stronger, smarter and faster than ordinary creatures. The beings affected by the disease quickly passed the normal creatures, having gained the abilities of magic. They became feared and hated by the creatures that worked hard for survival, although sometimes they were worshiped as gods.
These beings became known as the Gereksu, or the shined upon ones. They lived a life of pleasure and luxury. They soon took hold of the central lands, and ruled there. They demanded respect from all, and would attack without provocation.
However, there were certain problems the disease caused. As time progressed, the elder Gereksu began to drain away, life simple ebbing into nothingness. Some became in a sort of undead state, not fully aware of anything that was going on, others becoming insane and delusional. Others again simply died and returned to life again as undead or as ghosts, never to have a peaceful moment.
By then, most of the creatures had been infected. A pack of creatures worked on a cure for many years, until finally they came up with the solution. A Gereksu would have to give up all it's powers, and it's life of luxury to transfer the powers to another creature. The inherited powers were nowhere near as powerful or easy to use, and weakened considerably over the years.
Many Gereksu objected, and refused to give up their gifts. They refused to believe that the cure would work, and formed their own pack. The creatures with inherited powers were hunted by that pack, and loathed beyond anything else. That pack became known as the Moonshine Empire, and they sealed themselves of from most of the world. That was until the war broke out.
The packs fought a viscous and bloody battle, many of the smaller packs being wiped out completely. The war still rages on, even after the Moonshine Empire crushed some of it's competitors.
Gereksu and normal creatures have been known to mate, and have offspring. These offspring would have powers too, but as they aged they were affected differently. Throughout their life they would have to kill others, and feed off of their life to survive. They couldn't eat normally, and were feared throughout the lands. They became known as the Vempirs, the ones who killed others without mercy.
The luckless victims would roam the lands as shadow creatures, known as Shadire, without life or love. Sometimes they would appear on battlefields, and were said to carry off the dead. Naturally creatures avoided them whenever possible, but occasionally they would meet. When this happened, things got unpredictable. If a normal creature managed to capture a Shadire, they would be granted 2 wishes. The Shadire know this, and try to use it against the ordinary creature whenever possible.
