Aoika was just beginning to get used to her new territory. It was freezing, and harsh, and the prey was scarce and quick and fleet of foot. When it wasn't snowing it was hailing, the only shelter was dark caves with hard stone floors, and only in certain places could you feel comforting earth and grass beneath your poor, tortured feet which'd been taking your weight, on rock that was sometimes sharp and usually steep and always hard and cold, all day. The part of her that was thinking those thoughts hated this place and wanted to head back down to that nice warm savannah deserty place she'd found in the east.
But then again, equally much, she loved its beauty, the way you could struggle up a harsh ridge and come to a view that took what little breath you had left away, the way it was wild and free high above the world, and yes, perhaps harsh and cruel in its own way, but wasn't that simply the law of nature?
Sometimes life is harsh and cold and hard and sharp. But you have to take your joys when you find them. Aoika believed she'd found somewhere that mirrored that perfectly. And also a place which by its very nature was wild, where anybody could be free, here amongst the snow and the clouds and the soaring rock.
She was admiring such a moment now, standing on a smallish crag with the wind whipping snow in her face. She melted the snow as it got near her, and so she could see with perfect clarity the beautiful, beautiful view.
An eagle swooped down on a ledge nearby and Aoi grinned. It was looking straight at her but it hadn't even the sense to run. Gathering a ball of flames in her hand, she thought to herself, here comes dinner.
Suddenly the eagle's features melted into those of a Luxya.
"What?" Aoi exclaimed, not really being able to think of anything better to say.
"Please don't hurt me!" said the other Luxya-that-was-also-an-eagle. "I'm Tallia... I want to join your pack."
Aoika looked suspicious. "Who are you? What are you?"
"I'm Tallia," repeated the Luxya, and then her features melted again and she became some weird creature that looked like a cross between a wolf and a lynx. "And I'm a kyuun."
Aoika gasped. "I've heard of the Kyuverai! You want to join the Alliance?"
The kyuun nodded.
Aoika grinned. "Welcome then," she replied. "You can be our first Kappa.... no, make that Theta. You'll be a better Theta if you're really a kyuun."
Aoi grinned again, then she turned and surveyed the view again. "Really, I should be recruiting more..."
She considered, then let out a fierce howl like that of a wolf, calling out to anybody in the territory to come before her, for this was the territory of the Aurora Caeli Alliance.
"The net widens," commented the kyuun... Tallia, her name was? "Soon your pack will spread and grow."
Aoika nodded, and smiled. "I hope so. But for now, let's widen the net to the full territory. In other words, let's explore!"
Without another word both bounded off, looking for any creatures that might have answered Aoi's howl, and exploring the mountains.
